Celebrating its 10th Anniversary in July 2026, More Than A Haircut Barbershop is owned and operated by Joe Gentile. Joe is a fourth-generation barber, whose great-great grandfather had a barbershop in Sicily in the 1800's.

Here in Rochester the family passion for the craft was passed down through the generations to his great-grandfather and great-uncle, both of whom owned barber shops here in Rochester, New York. Having started to cut hair at 16 years old, and later during his time serving in the Army, Joe made the decision to become a professional barber. He started his professional career in 2001, and over the next decade and a half, Joe worked in several different barber shops before making the decision to launch More Than A Haircut Barbershop on July 5th, 2016.

More Than A Haircut barbershop was created in order for Joe to promote everything he loved about the industry and rebuild a fresh culture around those values. The goal was to challenge any negative stereotypes ever associated with barbershops and help to restore the respect and reverence barbers once held as pillars in their communities. 

A barber's chair is a place where one can take the time to mentor the young minds of the kids in our communities as they learn how to become young men, as well as upstanding citizens in the greater Rochester area and beyond. 

Joe's craftsmanship is well-established with shears, clippers, and a straight razor. Having worked with different textures of hair, and with the ever-changing styles of men's haircuts. More Than A Haircut is a fusion barbershop where cultures mesh together with old school values and the new school of thinking.

When asked, Joe might tell you: "Barbering runs through my veins. I love what I do and I live for the look of satisfaction on the face of my clients. I love meeting new people and having great conversations. What can I say, I'm Italian!"
